Tyrannosaurus Rex means 'Tyrant Lizard King'! 'Lizard' because scientists first thought dinosaurs were related to lizards and 'Tyrant King' because the T-Rex was so big and could eat any dinosaur!
A grown up Tyrannosaurus Rex could weigh as much as 15,500 pounds (7,000 kilograms), which is the same as a large African Bush Elephant or 78 grown up men. Heavy!
A grown up T-Rex could reach 12 meters (40 feet) long from the front of its head to the tip of its tail. That's longer than a normal school bus and almost as long as 3 cars parked bumper to bumper. Huge!
Lots of cartoons show the T-Rex walking upright, with its head and body directly above its legs, but scientists actually think it stood in a 'T' shape, with its body going forward and its tail going backwards for balance. Interesting!
A big Tyrannosaurus could reach a height of 3.6 meters (12 feet) from the floor to the top of their hips. That's taller than the height of a professional basketball hoop. Enormous!
The T-Rex had hollow bones which were strong without being too heavy. Just like birds today, the tyrannosaurus could breath from air stored in its bones as well as from its lungs. Wow!
The Tyrannosaurus Rex had around 60 sharp teeth that it used to eat its prey. Just like sharks today, the T-Rex was always growing new teeth, so if a tooth fell out in a fight it wasn't a big problem.
The T-Rex had the strongest bite of any known land animal, with a bite force of almost 12,800 pounds. That's 10 times more powerful than an alligator bite and would feel like an elephant falling on you!
Just like lions today, the Tyrannosaurus might have hunted in packs. Scientists have found fossilized footprints of several T-Rex moving together. Imagine being ambushed by 2 hungry Tyrannosaurus. Scary!
Scientists have found healed T-Rex bites in other dinosaurs. This proves that Tyrannosaurus were not just scavengers, eating the remains of dead dinosaurs, but actively hunted living dinosaurs for food.
