The name Stegosaurus is Greek for ‘Roof Lizard’. Well, that doesn’t make any sense, does it? No, it doesn’t, but the scientist who first discovered the Stegosaurus thought its plates were arranged on its back like a giant turtle.
The Stegosaurus is easy to recognize because of the rows of bony plates sticking out of its back. The plates weren’t great armor as they didn’t protect the Stegosaurus’ sides, and scientists think the plates were designed to attract mates.
The Stegosaurus’ plates were embedded within its skin and not attached directly to its skeleton, so in most fossils the plates are found separate from the body.
Scientists have found fossils of Stegosaurus plates with bite marks matching the teeth of an Allosaurus. Sometimes the bite marks healed, which shows the Allosaurus was hunting a live Stegosaurus and the Stegosaurus survived the attack.
The Stegosaurus had 4 long spikes at the end of its tail which it could swing at other dinosaurs to defend itself. Scientists have seen puncture wounds from a Stegosaurus spike in the tail of an Allosaurus, the apex predator of the day.
The Stegosaurus grew to be around 9 meters (30 feet) long, which is the same size as 2 average cars parked bumper-to-bumper. That’s huge!
A fully-grown Stegosaurus could reach up to 4.3 meters tall (14 feet) which is taller than a basketball hoop and almost the same height as a female giraffe.
Unlike other dinosaurs, a Stegosaurus didn’t have a very strong jaw, so it wouldn’t have been able to munch through tough plants. Instead, it used its sharp teeth to chew through tender leaves and ferns.
The Stegosaurus would swallow small rocks to help it digest leaves and ferns. The stomach stones would roll around inside the Stegosaurus’ belly and help it break down food.
The Stegosaurus wasn’t one of the most intelligent dinosaurs. In fact, the Stegosaurus had a brain the size of a lime, which is really small when you think how big the Stegosaurus actually was!
