Ever wondered why cats look so cute? One reason is that cats have such big eyes relative to the size of their head, bigger than any other mammal. Cats’ big eyes let in a lot of light and help them hunt in the dark.
The genes of a normal house cat are 95.6% the same as the genes of lions and tigers, and they share lots of the same characteristics too! For example, kittens and tiger cubs both learn to hunt through play.
Cats have soft pads on their paws which means they can walk almost silently, which is great for sneaking up on their prey. Their paws are so sensitive they can actually feel the vibrations of other animals walking nearby.
Has a cat ever licked you? If so, you’ll remember the feeling of their rough tongue. Cats have little backward facing spikes on their tongues which means they can lick the last remaining shreds of meat off a bone and keep their fur tangle-free.
Cats are one of the only animals on the planet who can’t taste sugar. Cats have taste buds like other animals, but as carnivores they respond to meaty flavors and are not sensitive to sweetness.
Cats have almost 40 times more odor-sensitive cells in their nose than a human! So cats can often smell things before they can see them. Cats also have a second ‘nose’ in their mouth which enables them to smell chemical markers from other cats.
Just like camels and giraffes, cats walk by moving both feet on one side of their body first and then moving both feet on the other side of their body. No other kinds of animals walk in this way!
Whiskers help cats to feel the world around them and work out whether they’ll be able to fit into different spaces. That’s why a cat’s whiskers are normally the same width as its body, so if its whiskers fit in a hole the cat knows its body won’t get stuck!
Most normal cats have 18 toes, with five toes on both front paws and four toes on both back paws. Some cats, called Polydactyl or ‘Mitten Cats’, have more toes on their front paws.
Cats have whiskers on the backs of their front legs too. When a cat has caught another animal these whiskers help the cat know the position of its prey and whether their victim is still moving.
